Asian American Film Festival kicks off in town

(by Maxim Almenas - April 30, 2008)

The Fort Lee Community Center showcased several independent films last week made by Asian filmmakers for the annual Asian-American Film Festival.

"Fort Lee and the tri-state area have a growing Asian-American population. This festival is a way to reach that community and all members of our community here in Fort Lee and Bergen County," said Tom Meyers, executive director of the Fort Lee Film Commission.

The 90-minute short film, "The Shoe Fairy" was a visually, eccentric film about a girl born footless. She gets a new lease on life after a doctor gives her feet and she then develops a fascination for shoes. It was Taiwanese director Robin Lee’s first commercial release.

The second film showed, "The Offering" by Hong Kong director, Paul Lee was inspired by a ballet choreography written by Jean Cocteau titled, "The Young Man and His Death." It’s about the passing of beloved friends in the prime of their lives before they realized their life’s potential. The film forced viewers to contemplate their own mortality as well as the balance between life and love.

The program is a lead up to the Reel Jersey Film Festival on Sept. 28, which has been combined with the Jersey Filmmakers of Tomorrow. It was sponsored by the Fort Lee and the Bergen County Film Commissions, of which Myers serves on both as executive director.
